چکیده

Parasites, in particular trematodes (Platyhelminthes: Digenea), play major roles in the population dynamics and community structure of invertebrates on soft-sediment mudflats. Here, we provide a list of the 20 trematode species currently known to infect molluscs, crustaceans and polychaetes from Otago Harbour (New Zealand) soft-sediment intertidal areas, as well as information on their transmission modes, life cycles, and known ecological impacts. Several of the host-parasite species combinations recorded here are reported for the first time. We also provide DNA barcodes, based on sequences of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene, for 19 of the 20 trematode species, to facilitate future identification of these parasites in marine ecological studies.

Climate change, parasitism and the structure of intertidal ecosystems.

Evidence is accumulating rapidly showing that temperature and other climatic variables are driving many ecological processes. At the same time, recent research has highlighted the role of parasitism in the dynamics of animal populations and the structure of animal communities. Here, the likely interactions between climate change and parasitism are discussed in the context of intertidal ecosyste...

Parasites of polychaetes and their impact on host survival in Otago Harbour, New Zealand

Parasitism is increasingly recognized as an important determinant of population dynamics, productivity and community structure in intertidal ecosystems, and yet there is very little known about the effect of parasites on polychaetes, which represent a major component of the benthic fauna. We surveyed 11 polychaete species from a mudflat in Otago Harbour, New Zealand, and found that seven of the...

The marine limpet Notoacmea scapha acts as a transmission sink for intertidal cercariae in Otago Harbour, New Zealand.

Marine limpets, Notoacmea scapha, were collected from an intertidal mud flat in Otago Harbour, New Zealand, and examined for infection with larval trematodes. Three separate species of trematode (opecoelid sp. A, Acanthoparyphium sp. A and Curtuteria australis) were identified from the limpets, based on molecular evidence. This is the first report of these three trematodes in limpets, indicatin...

Local variation of within-host clonal diversity coupled with genetic homogeneity in a marine trematode

Despite their ubiquity and importance to intertidal ecosystems, information is currently lacking regarding the genetic diversity of trematode parasites within coastal organisms and the distribution of their genetic variation among intertidal habitats. In this study, we quantiWed the clonal diversity of the coastal marine trematode Maritrema novaezealandensis within Zeacumantus subcarinatus snai...

Seasonal dynamics in an intertidal mudflat: the case of a complex trematode life cycle

Seasonal fluctuations of host densities and environmental factors are common in many ecosystems and have consequences for biotic interactions, such as the transmission of parasites and pathogens. Here, we investigated seasonal patterns in all host stages associated with the complex life cycle of the intertidal trematode Maritrema novaezealandensis on a mudflat where this parasite’s prevalence i...
